Monticello Media is a new Charlottesville-based company formed solely to purchase and operate six radio stations in Charlottesville as of October 2007. We do not have radio stations in any other markets. Our only focus and interest is serving Charlottesville area listeners and businesses. As a privately-held company, we don't have to weigh the whims of Wall Street against the needs of the constituents we serve.

Monticello Media's station mix is based on custom research conducted in the Charlottesville market. Our stations are designed to satisfy the interest and desires of our community and to allow area businesses to reach the most desirable consumers.

COMMON PRENATAL TESTS: ULTRASOUND, NON-STRESS TEST, VAGINAL/CERVICAL SMEAR AND X-RAY

Non-Stress Test

The FHR is recorded for twenty to thirty minutes with an external electronic fetal monitor, and the mother indicates each time she feels the baby move. If there is no spontaneous fetal movement, the baby may be asleep. The examiner may push on the mother's abdomen or make a loud noise near her abdomen to stimulate the baby. An increase of fifteen beats above the base line heart rate for fifteen seconds while the fetus is moving is normal and a sign of fetal well-being.

Predicts fetal well-being

Helps determine if a high-risk pregnancy can safely continue or if further testing is desirable

Ultrasound (Sonography)

High-frequency sound waves are sent through a transmitter into the mother's uterus via the abdomen or vagina. These waves echo back from various structures of the fetus, the placenta, and the mother's internal organs to form a picture on a video screen. Timing depends on the reason for testing.

  • Confirms pregnancy and number of babies
  • Helps estimate fetal age by measuring the skull, femur, crown-rump length, or other landmarks
  • Helps estimate fetal growth and weight
  • Helps locate fetal organs and structures for inspection, measurement, diagnosis, or treatment
  • Helps assess position and condition of placenta and cord
  • Detects fetal presentation and position
  • Helps assess amniotic fluid volume
  • Helps evaluate fetal characteristics and amniotic fluid volume for biophysical profile
  • Helps confirm diagnosis if other testing suggests a problem
  • Measures cervix to determine effacement

Vaginal/Cervical Smear

At any time during pregnancy, secretions from the mother's vagina of cervix can be obtained with a swab or suction bulb and then examined in a lab.

  • Detects organisms that cause infections
  • Determines whether membranes have ruptured
  • May be used to determine fetal lung maturity, if membranes have ruptured
  • Measures level of fetal fibronectin, which may help identify risk for preterm labor

X-ray

Ionizing radiation is used to take an internal picture of the mother and the fetus.

  • Helps estimate size and shape of mother's pelvis
  • Helps discover fetal position and presentation and number of babies
